ENS is updating .eth name pricing, renewals, and grace period.

Summary of changes

The annual fee for names of 5 characters or longer moves from $5 to $8 per year. Pricing for 3 and 4 character names is unchanged.

This change applies to new registrations and renewals once ENSv2 launches. Registrations and renewals completed before launch use the existing pricing.

Multi-year discounts are determined by how many years you register or renew in a single transaction, and apply to every year in that transaction. Existing time on the name doesn't count toward the tier. The same curve applies to first-time registrations and renewals.

Renewing a 5+ character name for one year costs $8 regardless of the existing expiry. Renewing the same name for six years costs $27 ($4.50/yr).

On v2 the grace period is 28 days, down from 90 on v1. During this window the name does not resolve and cannot be transferred. You can still renew during grace — doing so restores the name to active registration, along with prior records.

Because v2's grace is 62 days shorter, upgrading a name to v2 adds a one-time free 62-day renewal. It offsets the reduction, so upgrading costs you no time. Until a name is upgraded, it stays on the v1 90-day grace.

After the grace period ends without a renewal, the name is released and enters Price Cooldown.

Nothing happens automatically. A name in grace keeps its v1 90-day grace, and no names are released because of the launch.

You can't upgrade a name while it's in grace. Renew it back to active registration first, then upgrade — the one-time +62-day renewal is added at upgrade.

Example: when you upgrade an active name, the upgrade adds 62 days of registration and sets grace to 28 days. Your release date — expiry plus grace — lands on the same day it would have under v1's 90-day grace, so no time is lost.

The new pricing — including the multi-year discounts — applies when the ENSv2 registrar contracts deploy. Registrations and renewals completed before that point use the existing pricing.

The shorter 28-day grace period applies per name at upgrade. Until a name is upgraded to v2 it keeps the v1 90-day grace, and the one-time free 62-day renewal is added at the moment of upgrade.

Do I have to hit exactly two years to get the discount, or does a year and 11 months still count?

You need to hit the threshold. A year and 11 months falls short of the 2-year tier, so it's billed at the 1-year rate. To get the 2-year discount you need to renew for at least 2 years in one transaction.

Do the multi-year discounts work for both registering and extending?

Yes. Both new registrations and renewals get the same discount.

Do the multi-year discounts work for all name lengths, or only 5+ characters?

All name lengths. 3-char, 4-char, and 5+ char names all get the multi-year discount.

Do I still get the multi-year discount if I'm extending a name that's in grace period?

Yes. The discount works the same way whether the name is active or in grace. Note: the time you add gets attached to the name's original expiry date, not the grace end date. So if you only add a small amount during grace, it might not be enough to push the name back into active registration — extend enough to clear the original expiry.

Is there a cap on the multi-year discount?

No cap. The deepest tier is 6+ years at $4.50/year (for 5+ char names), and that rate applies no matter how many years past 6 you go.

Why was the grace period cut to 28 days?

A shorter grace keeps the name lifecycle tidier and lets names move through it faster. To keep it fair, upgrading a name to v2 grants a one-off free 62-day renewal — so the switch costs you no time.

How does the 28-day grace period work?

When your name expires, you have 28 days to renew it at the normal price. During those 28 days the name doesn't resolve — wallets and apps treat it like it's already expired. If you renew before the 28 days run out, the name is yours again. If you don't, it's released and goes into the 21-day Price Cooldown.

What is the one-off +62 days, and how does it work for my name?

When you upgrade a name to v2, 62 extra days of registration are added for free. It makes up for the shorter v2 grace period. v1 names that haven't upgraded keep their 90-day grace.

Is every name eligible for the +62 days?

Nearly all names are. A small number of wrapped names with certain fuses burnt aren't eligible for the upgrade renewal.

Do I have to upgrade?

No. A name stays on v1 — with the 90-day grace — for as long as you hold it. You only move to v2 by upgrading. If a name is released after expiry, whoever registers it next gets a v2 name.

If my name stops resolving while it's in grace, what happens to it?

During grace the name acts like it's expired. Lookups won't find it, and you can't transfer it. Your records still exist on chain — they're just hidden from resolution until the name is renewed.

When I renew my name out of grace, does it just start working again with my old records?

Yes. The moment you renew, the name is fully yours again. Lookups start working, and all your old records — avatar, addresses, text records — are still there. Nothing else to do.

Is Price Cooldown different in v2?

No. It works exactly the same way it did under v1.

How does Price Cooldown work?

After grace ends without a renewal, the name enters a 21-day declining-price auction called Price Cooldown. An additional fee starts at $100M and drops to $0 over those 21 days. Anyone can register it during that window, and they pay the additional fee on top of the normal registration fee.
