Set your primary name

Set which ENS name represents you across apps and wallets via the dashboard prompt or the Edit Profile page.

ENS App and Explorer are on the Sepolia testnet. Features may change before mainnet.

Your primary name is what apps show instead of your 0x123...456 address. For how it works, see What is a primary name?

There are two ways to set it. Use either:

  • Dashboard: opens a selection of names your wallet owns.

  • Edit Profile: sets a name directly from within that name's profile.

Good to know

  • ETH address record warning: if the name doesn't already point to your wallet via the ETH address record, the app warns you and offers to set it automatically. You can proceed or cancel.

  • When the transaction confirms, your primary name updates. In Edit Profile you'll see a primary name tick under the name.

  • The Dashboard selection lists every name your wallet owns, including subnames you've created (e.g. team.yourname.eth).

Use the Dashboard

Note: onchain changes cost gas — the network fee Ethereum charges to process a transaction. It is paid in ETH from your connected wallet and goes to the network, not to ENS. Your wallet shows the exact fee before you approve.

  1. Select your address, or your current primary name, in the top-right corner.

  2. Select Dashboard.

  3. Open the primary name dropdown and choose the name you want.

  4. Select Set as primary.

  5. Confirm the transaction in your wallet.

  2. Select Set primary name.

  3. Confirm the transaction in your wallet.

Common questions

Do I have to pay gas to set a primary name?

Yes. Setting a primary name is a gas-only transaction.

Can I set a subname as my primary?

Yes, a subname can be your primary name. Follow the same process from the name's profile, or in your Dashboard.

Why does my address show instead of my name?

If apps still show your 0x123...456 address, you haven't set a primary name on the wallet yet. Owning a name is not the same as setting it as primary. Use the Dashboard or the Edit Profile page to set one.

What if I want to switch primaries later?

You can change your primary name at any time.

How will others know I've set a primary?

They'll see your ENS name instead of your 0x123...456 address across apps that support ENS, including the ENS App and ENS Explorer.
