If you have received an email or message urging you to upgrade your name, please be aware this may be a scam — ENS will not prompt you to upgrade via unsolicited messages.
Upgrading moves a name from the old ENS registry (v1) to ENSv2. It keeps the name and all its records, and it's optional.
How to upgrade your name
To upgrade your name, start from the ENSv2 is here. banner and approve each step in your wallet. Depending on which names you pick, your wallet may ask you to approve more than once.

Note: onchain changes cost gas — the network fee Ethereum charges to process a transaction. It is paid in ETH from your connected wallet and goes to the network, not to ENS. Your wallet shows the exact fee before you approve.
Upgrading adds a free 62-day renewal. On v2 the grace period is 28 days instead of 90 (62 days shorter), so upgrading adds 62 days of registration to make up the difference. Your grace period end date doesn't move, and you lose no time in the switch.
Does upgrading also renew my name?
Not the way paid renewal does. Upgrading adds 62 free days, moving your expiry date forward to make up for the shorter 28-day grace period on v2. It doesn't add paid registration time. A name already in its grace period can't be upgraded. Renew it back into active registration first.
The dashboard button reads UPGRADE TO EXTEND NAME », but pressing it runs the upgrade only. After it confirms, the row changes to Extend Name », which you press to renew as a separate, second transaction. Expect two wallet signatures.
Do I have to upgrade?
No. A name stays on v1, with the 90-day grace period, for as long as you hold it. Nothing breaks: it resolves and renews as normal, and the upgrade prompt stays available. There's no deadline, but a name that has expired into its grace period can't be upgraded — renew it first, then upgrade.
Why can't I upgrade this name in the app?
Names you can upgrade in the app show an Eligible for upgrade badge (purple, <> icon) in your dashboard My Names list, with the action UPGRADE TO EXTEND NAME ». You can't upgrade names that show an ENSv1 only badge in the app. They show MANAGE ON EXPLORER ↗ and you manage them at explorer.ens.dev instead.
What about the old ENS app?
The old app works with v1 names only, and registering or extending a name isn't available there. This app and ENS Explorer handle both v1 and ENSv2 names, so manage everything in them. An upgraded name stops appearing in the old app; nothing is lost, and you'll find it on your dashboard here.
Can I still renew my name in the old app?
No. Renewals aren't available in the old app. Renew in this app or in ENS Explorer, whether the name is v1 or upgraded.
My name disappeared from the old app after I upgraded
That's expected. Upgrading moves the name to ENSv2, and the old app lists v1 names only. Nothing is lost: the name is on your dashboard in this app and in ENS Explorer.
My upgrade stopped partway. What do I do?
Press Retry. The upgrade carries on with the names that have not finished; names that already upgraded stay upgraded and are skipped. If it keeps failing, contact support with the name and the error you see.
