What are multi-year discounts?
Registering or renewing an ENS name for two or more years in a single transaction gives you a lower annual rate. The longer the term, the bigger the saving — the discount applies to every year in that transaction, and you pay one amount at checkout for the full period. The same tiers apply to first-time registrations and renewals, and to 3-character, 4-character, and 5+ character names alike.
The registration and renewal pages show the per-year cost and total as you adjust the duration, so you can see exactly what you'll pay before confirming.
Discount tiers
The discount is stepped by the time you're adding. The percentage applies to the base price for the entire term:

Bases are $8/year for 5+ character names, $160/year for 4-character names, and $640/year for 3-character names. The deepest tier applies to any term of at least 6 years — there's no cap on term length.
Common questions
Why isn't a 3-year registration exactly 3× a 1-year registration?
Because the discount applies to the whole registration. A 1-year registration sits at the 0% tier — full base price. A 3-year registration sits at the 31.25% tier — every year of the three is priced at the discounted rate, not just years 2 and 3. For a 5+ character name:
1 year = $8.00 ($8.00/year × 1).
3 years = $16.50 ($5.50/year × 3).
Why does picking 6 years cost less in total than picking 5 years?
Because the tiers are stepped, and the tier for terms of at least 6 years (43.75% off) is meaningfully steeper than the 3–5 year tier (31.25% off). For a 5+ character name (base $8/year):
5 years × $5.50/year = $27.50 total.
6 years × $4.50/year = $27.00 total.
You get an extra year for $0.50 less. The same shape applies to 4-char and 3-char names: in each tier, 6 years total is slightly less than 5 years total.
Does the discount apply when I renew?
Yes. Multi-year discounts apply to both registrations and renewals.
Does my existing registration time count toward the discount?
No. The discount is per transaction. If your name has one year remaining and you renew for an additional two years, the renewal transaction gets the 2-year 12.5% discount — but the year you've already paid for stays at whatever rate it was registered at.
Is there a limit to how many times I can get multi-year discounts?
No. You only need to add the minimum term to be eligible, and you're eligible each time you register a name or as many times as you renew.
Do I need to select exact years?
No, you can select by date. The time being added will determine your discount tier, and apply to the total time added.
How do discounts apply to names in Grace Period?
You renew a name from the name expiry date, not the grace period end date. The discount applies based on the time being added.
