If you have received an email or message urging you to upgrade your name, please be aware this is a scam — ENS will not prompt you to upgrade via unsolicited messages.
Upgrading moves a name from the old ENS registry (v1) to ENSv2, unlocking app features and more functionality. Upgrading keeps the name and all its records intact, and it's optional.

How to upgrade your name
To upgrade your name, start from the Upgrade Names banner (or find it in Dashboard), and approve each step in your wallet. Depending on which names you pick, your wallet may ask you to approve more than once.
1. Select UPGRADE NAMES.
The banner shows on the homepage, the docs site, and as Welcome to the new ENS app on your dashboard.

2. Pick your names.
The selector (Your names are ready to upgrade) lists every eligible name with a checkbox, pre-selected, and a counter of selection. Use Search names to narrow the list, and toggle checkboxes to choose.

Select UPGRADE NAMES again at the bottom-right of the selector.
3. Approve in your wallet:
Upgrading your names... Setting up your HCA
Upgrading your names... Allowing the migration helper to migrate wrapped names
Upgrading your names... Atomically upgrading daring-sparrow.eth
Without smart sessions you approve each name separately, so the wallet prompts you more often.

Once everything confirms, each upgraded name shows the Renew Name » action. The banner stays until every eligible name is upgraded.

Note: onchain changes cost gas — the network fee Ethereum charges to process a transaction. It is paid in ETH from your connected wallet and goes to the network, not to ENS. Your wallet shows the exact fee before you approve.
Troubleshooting
I can't upgrade my name.
A name already into its grace period can't be upgraded - renew it into active registration first, then upgrade.
Names using the Name Wrapper contract that have certain fuses burnt cannot be upgraded. These names will show an
ENSv1 onlybadge in the app, and can only be managed in explorer.ens.dev.
Eligible names for upgrade will show an Eligible for upgrade badge (purple, <> icon) in your dashboard, with the action UPGRADE TO RENEW NAME » - pressing it runs the upgrade only.
My upgrade stopped partway.
Select Retry. The upgrade carries on with the names that have not finished; names that already upgraded stay upgraded and are skipped. If it keeps failing, contact support with the name and the error you see.
My name disappeared from the old app after upgrade
That's expected. Upgrading moves the name to ENSv2, and the old app lists v1 names only. Nothing is lost: the name is on your dashboard in this app and in ENS Explorer.
Common Questions
Do I have to upgrade?
Upgrading is optional. Upgrading makes new app features and new architecture of ENSv2 available to you. It's recommended that all names upgrade.
You can stay on v1 too. Nothing breaks: it resolves and renews as normal, and the upgrade prompt stays available. There is no deadline to upgrade.
Does upgrading also renew my name?
No, not the way paid renewal does. However, upgrading adds 62 days to your registration, moving your expiry date to make up for the shorter 28-day grace period on v2. Your grace period end date doesn't move, and you lose no time in the switch.
Can i use the old ENS app?
The old-app works with v1 names only, and an upgraded name will not appear. Renew in the ENS app or in ENS Explorer, whether the name is v1 or upgraded.
How can i check if my name is upgraded.
Go to the dashboard. Names that aren't yet upgraded will display either Eligible for upgrade, or ENSv1 only.
